A funeral for Jo Ann Smokey-Martinez, 85, a lifetime resident of Gardnerville, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stewart Community Baptist Church Tahoe Indian Parish in Carson City.

Smokey-Martinez died June 21, 2006, at the Carson Valley Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Minden, to William Smokey and Sadie Jo Harper.

Smokey-Martinez was a homemaker and cook. She was active in the Baptist church and a member of the Great Basin Native Basketweavers Association. She demonstrated her basketweaving skills at the Smithsonian Institute and in Hawaii. She received the Governor's Award for Basketweaving. She was active in the Senior Citizens Council.

Smokey-Martinez was preceded in death by sisters Theresa S. Jackson, Lucille Smokey, Bernice S. Auchoberry and Freida Smokey Wyatt; brothers Huntington Smokey, Carnegie Smokey, Romaine T. Smokey Sr. and Thomas Smokey.

Among her survivors are son Harold Holbrook of Carson City; sister Geraldine S. Collett; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial will take place at Woodfords Cemetery in Woodfords, Calif.
