MADD seeks sponsors for crashed-car exhibit

The Lyon County Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is seeking sponsors to help pay for a crashed-car exhibit to be used in Northern Nevada to remind drivers of the consequences of drinking and driving.

This exhibit will be a trailer holding the 1989 Mustang that was driven by alcohol- and drug-impaired driver Stephen Scharosch, who hit a van containing seven members of a Utah family, killing five, including four children. The force of the impact cut a Mustang in two. The exhibit will be used at events such as the Nevada State Fair, Hot August Nights, community awareness events and school events.

The major costs for construction of the trailer, mounting of the car, trailer graphics and more have been covered by donations by AAA Nevada, the E.L. Cord Foundation and the Northern Nevada DUI Task Force. Since there will be additional ongoing expenses to maintain, house, transport and repair the exhibit, MADD is looking for sponsors who would like to support the project with a minimum $1,000 donation. Some residents could qualify for energy savings

Practicing conservation can ensure people stay within their household budgets as power costs continue to soar.

Money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Sierra Pacific Power Co. is allowing Energy Nevada and Carson City to supply 30 low-to-moderate income households with newer, more energy-efficient refrigerators or washing machines. Residents who qualify will be taken care of on a first-come, first-served basis.

Family passes to Wild Island drawn

Now through Friday there will be a daily drawing for a family pass to Wild Island Water Park for blood donors at United Blood Services, 256 E. Winnie Lane.

There is also a drawing for a $25 gas card, in addition to the monthly drawing for gift certificates to Heidi's, Chili's or the Carson Nugget. Each donor will also receive one free movie ticket for the new "Superman" movie, or a movie of choice.

Relay for Life honors cancer survivors

The Relay for Life, a program of the American Cancer Society, will be July 14-15, from 5 p.m. to 11 a.m. The Relay for Life goes throughout the night, with at least one person circling the track at Carson High School every minute, symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.
