Teens should enjoy their activities during the summer program, because they might not be able to have similar activities this fall.

According to Jannette Hoffert, supervisor for Lyon County Park and Recreation Department, there is no suitable building to house the county's teen after-school program, so it may have to be canceled.

The summer teen program for Dayton is being held in the Dayton Community Center, but "I have no place for the program next fall," Hoffert said. "I'm not sure what we can do for next fall, but we have a little time to figure that out."

Hoffert said transportation issues and already scheduled programs will keep the teens out of the community center.

She said the program doesn't need anything fancy for a building.

"It can be very simple," she said. "Preferably a warehouse-type building so they can still shoot hoops, with heating, air-conditioning and a bathroom, and we'll do the rest.

She said that because of transportation issues, any building should be located in Dayton, though Mound House could work, depending on the number of teens participating.

Teens participating in the summer program spend Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays playing games, crafts and other activities, Hoffert said. They go on one field trip each week as well as work on community service projects and study math and literacy.

In Silver Springs, teens meet for their program in the Silver Stage Middle School lunchroom.

For the Dayton program, the cost is $12 per week.

All costs for the Silver Springs program are covered by a 21st Century grant.
