Cockerill, Jenkins qualify for state

J.T. Cockerill and Scott Jenkins were able to qualify for the NIAA 4A State Championships for the Carson High boys golf team.

Cockerill finished second in the Northern 4A Tournament, which concluded on Wednesday in Elko. After firing a 76 on Tuesday, Cockerill shot a 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday to finish with a 149. Fallon's Scott Smith was the low score medalist with a 144 (72-72).

Jenkins also qualified for state after finishing with a 150 (74-76). Cockerill and Jenkins were among the top five finishers not on the top two qualifying teams to make it to state. Jenkins finished fifth overall.

Fallon won the title with a 763 (370-393) and Galena was the other team to qualify for state as it finished second with a 779 (393-386). Spanish Springs was third (792-389-403), Elko was fourth (400-397), Carson was fifth (806-404-402), Reno High was sixth (410-409-819), Douglas was seventh (872-437-435) and South Tahoe was eighth (878-443-435).

Galena's Trent Hays took third overall with a 149 (73-76). Also for Galena, Dan Wittlinger was fifth (150-78-72), Ryan Hill was 11th (155-79-76) and Steve Heberger was 20th (81-81-162).

For Carson, Matt Mitchell finished with a 166 (84-82), Zack Rispin finished with a 167 (82-85), Jimmy Potter finished with a 174 (88-86) and Spencer Brinson shot 175 (88-87).
