Supervisors expected to OK budget

A special meeting at noon today of the Carson City Board of Supervisors will focus on adopting next year's spending plan and provide residents with a final opportunity for comments.

The budget is for the fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30, 2007, and will total nearly $116 million, once final decisions are made on how to spend an additional $300,000 sought by city departments for an array of needs, according to City Manager Linda Ritter.

Two new sheriff's deputies will be added to ease conditions at the jail. Several other positions paid for with grant money previously, however, are now being provisionally funded, and a couple of jobs aren't being filled.

A property tax increase for new-construction projects is being proposed that will allow the city to charge an additional 29 cents per each $100 of assessed value.

The supervisors will revisit the tax increase in June, and the Nevada Tax Commission still needs to approve it. It is expected to raise $57,000 during its first year, and should begin July 1.

Costs are expected to rise for residents requiring an ambulance trip and for out-of-county waste haulers, although water, sewer and cemetery rates are expected to remain the same, Ritter said.

Some budget sections will be voted on individually:

• Distribution of money to area nonprofits.

• The Sierra Forest Fire Protection District spending plan.

• The Redevelopment Authority budget.
