Carson boys second, girls fourth in swimming

The Carson High boys took second while the Senator girls settled for fourth in the Northern 4A Swimming Championships held on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

Reno ran away with the boys crow, scoring 514 points while Carson was second with 233. Douglas took third with 202 points.

Reno also won the girls meet with 349 points while McQueen was second with 291. Galena edged Carson for third 269-267. The top three finishers qualified for next week's NIAA 4A State Championships.

For Carson, Abby Niehoff and Kevin Dyer won the 500-yard freestyles as Niehoff finished in 5 minutes, 9.93 seconds for the girls and Dyer finished in 4:55 for the boys.

Barbara Perkins was fifth in 5:266.71 and Tatum Boehnke was sixth in 5:30.27 for the girls.

Carson girls also qualified for state in the 400 free relay as Julie Asire, Tatum Boehnke, Hilary Schlager and Rebekah Niehoff were third in 3:51.40. Sara Sigala, Kaylee Hames, Katie O'Neill and Josefina Sigala were fourth for Douglas in 3:54.96.

The Senator boys also qualified for state in the 400 free relay as Matt Grunert, Garrett Clayton, Paul Chang and Kevin Dyer took second in 3:34.92. The Douglas boys of Marco Hyman, Ben Weiss, Blake Maxwell and Taylor Brockway were fourth.

In the girls 200 medley relay, Galena qualified for state by taking second as Cady Auble, Janelle Lasko, Kayla Mariani and Lauren Vessie finished in 1:56.49.

But the Carson girls of Rebekah Niehoff, Schlager, Jessica Goddard and Abby Niehoff just missed qualifying, finishing fourth in 1:57.69. McQueen was third in 1:57.42.

Carson's boys of Matt Grunert, Garrett Clayton, Kevin Dyer and Chris Earwood were able to qualify in the 200 medley relay as they took second in 1:48.77. Ryan Owens, Keegan Ferrari, Andrew Musselman and Breen Werschky also qualified for Galena in third in 1:50.47.

In the girls 50 free, Mariani was second in 24.88, Lasko was fourth in 25.76 and Asire was fifth in 25.91.

Niehoff also qualified for state in the 100 butterfly where she was third in 59.22. Mariani was second in 59.10.

In the girls 100 free, Lasko was third in 55.74 while Schlager was fifth in 56.82 and Asire was sixth in 57.31.

In the boys 100 free, Owens was third in 50.87.

Carson girls also just missed qualifying in the 200 free relay as Asire, Boehnke, Sarah Metcalf and Abby Niehoff were fourth in 1:46.48. Lasko, Vessie, Auble and Mariani were third in 1:43.71. Carson's boys also just missed qualifying in the 200 free relay, taking fourth as Grunert, Clayton, Paul Chang and Dyer were fourth in 1:37.69.

In the boys 100 backstroke, Owens was third in 1:00.18 and Grunert was fifth in 59.46. In the girls 100 breaststroke, Josefina Sigala was third for Douglas in 1:11.65 Clayton was fifth in the boys 100 breaststroke in 1:04.72 while Keegan Ferrari was third in 1:03.85.
