FERNLEY SOFTBALL ADVANCES

Fernley ended Dayton's season Saturday by taking the second game of a doubleheader in their 3A Northern Softball Tournament best-of-three series played at Fernley.

The Vaqueros dropped the first game 2-0 but came back in the third and decisive game, 10-3.

Ddayton took advantage of several Fernley errors to score two runs against losing pitcher Heather Mathews. She scattered four hits and struck out eight.

Fernley stranded 10 baserunners.

Fernley coach Diane Chapin said the Vaqueros were flat in the first game, but they played intense like they did Friday in the third game.

Catcher Severana Johnson set the tone when she led off Saturday's second game with a solo home run.

Fernley also bunched four runs one inning later and added two more in the sixth.

Mathews picked up the win.

Fernley will play Boulder City in the opening round of the Class 3A Softball Tournament on Friday at noon. The state tournament is being played at Damonte Ranch High School.
