A memorial service for John P. Burns, 97, a resident of Carson City since 1967, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Burns died May 6, 2006, in Evergreen. He was born July 5, 1908, in Hastings, Colo., to John H. Burns and Ann Cruse.

He married Helen Gooch on Sept. 24, 1939, in Reno.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in Nevada.

He attended the Western Institute, Stanford University and Santa Clara University, majoring in business management and public relations. He worked for Sears Roebuck, Standard Oil and several chambers of commerce before starting a private employment service in Las Vegas in 1946.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Carson Lodge No. 1, York Rite Bodies, Edward C. Peterson Commandery No. 8 Knights Templar and a member of the Ben Ali Shrine in Sacramento, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Among his survivors are his wife of Carson City and his sister Shirley Morris of Fresno, Calif.
