It's a moment that Fallon's Scott Smith will surely never forget - sinking a birdie putt on the 18th and final hole to secure individual and team titles in the NIAA 4A State Championships.
Smith's birdie on the 18th allowed Fallon to win its first ever state title in boys golf on Tuesday at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. Smith also became Fallon's first individual state champion.
For Carson High, J.T. Cockerill had an outstanding tournament as well, finishing seventh.
Fallon finished with a 764 (383-381) to finish one stroke ahead of Green Valley (394-371), thanks to Smith's birdie. They were followed by Coronado (387-396-783), Bishop Gorman (402-386-788), Sierra Vista (399-394-793) and Galena in sixth (410-421-831).
Cockerill was consistent as he shot a 2-over-par 74 on both days to finish with a 148. Smith finished with a 140 (69-71) to finish two strokes ahead of Green Valley's Adam Tebbs (75-67), Gorman's Vince Rivera (71-71) and Cimarron-Memorial's Spencer Wilde (75-67), who all shot 142. Also for Carson, Scott Jenkins finished with a 160 (80-80).
Other individual finishers for Fallon were Andy Hicks, who was 10th (75-76, 151), Jason Kirby, 14th (80-75-155), Braydon Jacobs (78-79-157), Charlie Lockwood (81-80-161) and Shane Smith (81-84-165).
For Galena, Dan Wittlinger shot 155 (77-78) to tie for 14th, Ryan Hill shot 161 (78-83), Trent Hays shot 165 (81-84), Steve Blackhart fired 188 and Steve Heberger fired 191.
3A GOLF
Fernley's Brandon Dalton settled for fourth in the 3A State Tournament in Pahrump. Dalton was in second after the first day on Monday when he shot a 1-over 73. He ended up at 149 after shooting a 76 on Tuesday.
In the team standings, Boulder City (767-387-380) won and was followed by Virgin Valley (820-405-415), Lowry (847-425-422), Spring Creek (851-425-426) and Fernley (872-429-443).
Yerington's Ryan Rife was sixth after shooting a 155. Rife rebounded after a first round 81 to shoot 74 on Tuesday. Fernley's Kevin Leestma was 10th (160-77-83).
For Dayton, Kevin Goles was 14th (161-80-81) and Shane Castro was 15th (164-80-84). Other local individuals included Yerington's Vinnie Arrighi (90-81-171) and Fernley's Kyle Thompson (89-86-175), Colton Keever (195) and Jesse Turner (199).
