Abby Niehoff won the 500-yard freestyle for the Carson High girls swim team in the NIAA 4A State Championships in Las Vegas.
Niehoff almost won two titles as she was narrowly beaten in the 100 butterfly where she settled for second. For Carson's boys, Kevin Dyer also had an outstanding effort in the 500 free in lowering his personal best time by nearly five seconds in taking second.
On the strength of Niehoff's effort, Carson's girls took ninth with 18 points. Coronado won the girls title with 97 points. Reno High won the boys title with 121 points while Carson was 10th with 17.
Niehoff won the 500 free in 5 minutes, 1.69 seconds. She also met her goal by finishing the 100 fly in 58.05, just being edged out for the title as the winning time was 57.85. Dyer finished the 500 free in 4:49.12.
Also competing for Carson were Matt Grunert, Garrett Clayton, Paul Chang and Dyer in the 400 free relay and Grunert, Clayton, Dyer and Chris Earwood in the 200 medley relay. Also competing for the Senator girls were Julie Asire, Rebekah Niehoff, Hilary Schlager and Tatum Boehnke in the 400 free relay.
Galena's girls took sixth with 33 points on the strength of third place finishes in the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Galena finished the 200 free relay in 1:43.38 and the 200 medley relay in 1:56.41.
