Jeanne Reid of Carson City has attended all eight Senior Celebrations so she can peruse the tables of information offered to the adults of Carson City.

"I'm sure I've used some of the services. This is very informative," she said.

At the free annual event sponsored by the Senior Service Network, dozens of businesses and nonprofit groups set up tables with free information on who they are and what they can do for just about anyone.

The Singing Seniors of the Carson City Senior Citizens Center performed several songs for attendees.

Cordialea Athena, home-companion coordinator and Lifeline program manager for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, said though many stopped to help themselves to miniature candy bars, they also took an application form for the new "Senior Power" program.

"We're getting a good response for it," Athena said. "Any time someone hears about it, they're very happy to find there's no wage restrictions.

"But there is an age restriction; they must be 60 or older. They just can't believe it's free."

Senior Power is a cooperative effort of RSVP and Sierra Pacific Power Co. to weatherize homes for better heating and cooling.

Virginia Cannon made the drive from Fallon to attend the event.

"I'm looking for homeopathic information," Cannon said. "I usually find stuff available here. I really enjoy this event."

Hundreds of seniors received free tote bags and filled them with pamphlets, booklets and free "goodies" given away by vendors.

Senior Service Network provides one-time financial assistance to seniors who are not able to get it anywhere else. The service has helped people who may not have been able to remain in their homes receive medical equipment or necessary medication.
