Yankees, Cardinals set to begin play

Summer baseball action is set to begin with the Nevada Yankees and the Carson Cardinals.

The Yankees will begin play this weekend at Carson High. The Yankees will host Redding, Calif., at noon Saturday and the San Francisco Angels at noon Sunday.

Among the local players on the Yankees' roster are Chad Walling, Jimmy Pierce, Taylor Meiras and Jesse Rasner from Western Nevada Community College, Cal Lewis, who is coming off his junior year at South Dakota State, Carson High graduate Eric Melendez and Whittell's Jeff Young and Brian Peat.

The Cardinals, comprised of Carson High players, will open play today in the Reno Knights Memorial Day Tournament. The Cardinals will play at 5 p.m. against Damonte Ranch at Damonte Ranch. The Yankees and Cardinals will play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Ron McNutt Field.
