After three previous top four finishes and a second place finish last year, Galena High finally wrapped up its first ever Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Award of Excellence title as the state's best overall 4A athletic program.

Galena finished first in the NIAA Award of Excellence standings for academics, athletics and sportsmanship for 2005-2006. Carson High finished fourth. Galena finished with a record 3,930 points.

Points are awarded in a year-long scoring system where schools earn points based on their varsity teams' performance in the classroom, at the athletic venue and in the Citizenship Through Sports Program. Each of the major categories in high school activities - academics, athletics and sportsmanship - were weighted equally.

Galena was followed by Palo Verde (3,373), Reno High (3,310) and Carson (3,221). It was the fourth top four finish for Carson in the last five years. Carson won the title in 2001-2002.
