An accident victim with a broken back walked with two others a quarter-mile to get help for their friends injured in a wreck early Friday morning in east Carson City, officials said.
According to the Carson City Sheriff's Department, a Ford Explorer was heading toward Fifth Street about 1 a.m. when its 16-year-old female driver lost control near Buzzy's Ranch Road. The Explorer overturned several times, ejecting a teenage female passenger and trapping the driver, before stopping about 25 feet up the hillside on the south side of the road.
It appears three other passengers, including one who was later determined to have a broken back, were able to pull themselves from the wreckage and walk to a nearby home to call for help.
Rescue crews had to cut the driver from the mangled truck and she, along with three others, were taken by helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with severe injuries. Three names are being withheld until family members have been notified.
Sgt. Mark Marshall said two others, Amber Fox, 18, and Kenrich Miller, 21, were treated and released Friday afternoon.
The road in both directions was blocked for about four hours as helicopters landed to remove the injured, and the wreckage was cleared.
Excessive speed appears to be a factor in the accident, according to the Sheriff's Department.
