NDOW director interviews are set for early December

According to a recent press release by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), the Nevada State Board of Wildlife Commissioners will interview seven applicants for the position of Wildlife Director when they meet in Reno on Dec. 7- 8.

The board will recommend at least three candidates to the governor's office, with the final selection to be made by the governor.

Former Wildlife Director Terry Crawforth retired from the agency in July 2006, after 33 years with the agency.

The interviews and deliberations are open to the public, and will be held at Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) headquarters at 1100 Valley Road.

Applicants for wildlife director are: K.L. Cool, of Payson, Ariz., a retired Director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources; Bruce Crawford of Olympia, Wash., a former assistant director at Washington Fish and Wildlife; Kenneth E. Mayer, of Sacramento, Calif., a Branch Chief for the California Department of Fish and Game; David Sanger, of Reno, a Staff Biologist with NDOW; Bruce R. Schmidt, former Fish Research & Development Director, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife of Damascus, Ore., and San Stiver of Prescott, Ariz., a former Staff Biologist with NDOW.

The minimum qualifications for the position of Wildlife director are established in Nevada Revised Statutes 501.333, which states that the director shall be a person having an academic degree in the management of wildlife or a closely related field, substantial experience in the management of wildlife, and a demonstrated ability to administer a major public agency.

The Board of Wildlife commissioners will interview applications and select at least three nominees for consideration by the governor. The Wildlife Director serves at the pleasure of the governor.
