A five-acre brush fire along State Route 339 south of Yerington is threatening structures, according to an employee of the Yerington Volunteer Fire Department.

The employee described the fire as near Perry's Onion Sheds, growing rapidly and said it had jumped a river.

"The fire is in a bunch of farming area right now and we are just trying to keep it out of the haystacks," said Central Lyon County Fire Chief John Gillenwater. "This is a really dirty fire because of the season."

Another fire is burning on Campbell Lane, she said. That fire is now contained.

The fires are on opposite sides of town.

According to the National Weather Service, winds from the southwest are 21 mph with gusts to 38 mph.

Updates will be posted as more information becomes available.
