Seven days below zero at Wildhorse Reservoir

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): We are having a heat wave, up here.

Yesterday, our low was 10 above. Today, it went all the way up to 11. No reports, because there were no human beings out there fishing, over the weekend.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that there is ice forming along the edges.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Fishing is still going strong.

For Best results, most anglers are floating nightcrawlers.

Some are reporting success with various colors of Power Bait, such as orange, rainbow and red.

Rainbows are biting off shore at Snallygaster, Nightcrawler Bay and at the old boat ramp.

Ice is starting to form around the edges but getting a boat in is not a problem.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County reported that he caught 4 fish on Monday, but nothing super big. He was fishing from shore with Power Bait.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Valerie at Crosby's Lodge at (775) 476-0400 reported: The weather has been cold but the fishing has been pretty good. The biggest was a 11-pound, 4-ounce (29.5 inches) Cutt caught from a boat way over at the Pyramid.

There were also four 9-pounders, one 8-pounder, one 7-pounder and two 5-pounders.

Most of those were caught from boats. There were a few caught from shore, but not many.

Two of the 9-pounders were caught by fly fishermen who were fishing at "The Nets."

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Andy at the Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks at 358-6113: Pyramid is a little slower than it has been. It is even slowing down for the trollers. We went out yesterday (Sunday) and fly fished in the Wino Beach and Cattleguard areas without one grab. Pretty darn slow for us!

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store at (775) 476-0555 reported: It's been cold! It is 27 degrees right now (Tuesday morning) and it actually feels warm.

The fishing has been good, overall, but the numbers of fish being caught has dropped.

We are not seeing any more 30-40 fish days for a fisherman, probably because of the cold.

The boaters are covering more areas and they are trolling a little bit deeper, but not super deep.

George (Pyramid Lake Charters) caught a 7.8 pounder and a 7.4 pounder the other day. One was caught north and the other was south.

Blockhouse has been good for the spincasters and "The Nets" have been good for the fly guys.

RED LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that there is ice forming along the edges.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448): Same report as last week: Water flows are 5,500 CFS and water is low.

Rainbows: Drifting the Redding to Anderson stretch for wild rainbows, drifting in the late afternoons. Fishing is fair. Most days producing 15 fish days, average size is 12-18 inches. Fly fishing. Using Pheasant Tail (No. 16), Fox's Poophas (No. 16). Standard flies for this river .

King Salmon: Fishing for Kings is fair to good , still catching 2-8 fish a day. This is the late Fall run salmon, the salmon are beautiful and bright. Some heavy, heavy rain and high winds over the weekend put a damper on the fishing. All of the salmon are caught with Flatfish lures, T-55's.

SMITH RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero: The Smith River will produce nice winter Steelhead as we move into the months of December and January .

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): Fishing has been good to excellent dependent on the day. We have been trolling at 180-380 feet with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows. I've been fishing at Cal-Neva Point, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Point. We've been catching 3-9 fish per trip.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: I've been trolling at Ski Run Shelf and Camp Richardson. We have been trolling at 180-280 feet with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.

The jiggers are jigging in water 160-240 feet deep, with White Star jigs or Squid jigs (tipped with a live minnow) at Ski Run Mound and Camp Richardson Shelf.

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore: Gene St. Denis: Toplining for rainbows has been slow to good dependent on the day at Eagle Point, Zephyr Cove, Deadman's Point and Sand Harbor.

LAKE TAHOE - SOMEWHERE: Jack Cooke of Carson City reported that he and his two fishing partners (Jeff and Scott) fished in his boat last Thursday, and they caught a couple of small Mackinaw trout with lures.

TOPAZ LAKE: Will re-open on Monday morning, Jan. 1.

TRUCKEE RIVER, NEV: Andy at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store: The river was doing fairly well, but it has now tapered off.

If you go fishing, don't go early, it will be a waste of time. Go about 1 p.m. and then fish until about 4 p.m.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: We've got ice on the reservoir.

I don't know how thick it is but we are about ready for ice fishing, up here. It won't be long now, because of the cold nights.

We have had 7 straight days of cold weather that has been down to 15 below zero.

It was 12 below last night (Sunday) and it was 10 below, the night before (Saturday).

We also have about 3-4 inches of snow on the ground.

This is that time of the year to drink whiskey or hot coffee or both at the same time.
