A Carson City man was in a drug-induced coma Tuesday after being assaulted sometime around 11 p.m. on Hot Springs Road on Saturday.

Carson City Sheriff's Detective Dave Legros said officers were called to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center about 11:30 p.m. by emergency room personnel after 20-year-old Jose Contreras was dropped off with massive head injuries caused by punches and stomping.

By 1:23 a.m., Contreras was transported by helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno and was listed in stable condition in a drug-induced coma. He remained in intensive care there on Tuesday, Legros said.

He said friends reportedly found Contreras injured near the Quik Stop Market in the 600 block of Hot Springs Road and took him to the hospital.

Legros said the details of the assault and the assailants are unknown at this time. Contreras has not been able to aid detectives in the investigation.

"We believe he was attacked by a group of people. We currently are following up on leads," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Legros or Detective Brian Mays at 887-2020, ext. 1400.
