William 'Bill' Dolan

A funeral for William "Bill" Dolan, 83, a lifelong Nevada resident and longtime Carson City resident, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peters Episcopal Church.

Mr. Dolan died Oct. 12, 2006, in Carson City. He was born April 2, 1923, in Ely to Mark Lorenzo and Elizabeth Muriel Dolan.

He married Dorothy M. Fendrich on Nov. 5, 1945 in Asbury Park, N.J.

He graduated from Carson High School in 1941, and received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno.

He worked for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 to 1988 as a reporter, photo editor and advertising director, a position he held for 15 years. He continued writing his "Past Pages" column for 59 years until the day he died. He also taught in public schools from 1950 to 1954, and was once principal of the Cherry Creek schools in Cherry Creek.

He served in the U.S. Signal Corps during World War II.

He was a member of the Carson City Host Lions Club for more than 40 years, and had served as president; a member of the Sigma Delta Chi Society of Professional Journalists while attending UNR; a member of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion; the director of the National Press Photographers Association; was chairman of the Nevada Day Committee for many years, serving as Grand Marshall in the Nevada Day Parade; was the founding member of the Carson City Toastmaster's Club and served as the Toastmaster's Area Governor.

He was awarded "Man of the Year" in Carson City on more than one occasion.

He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Lawrence Dolan in 1995, and by granddaughter Christa Ballew-Matthews Sept. 18, 2006.

Among his survivors are his wife, of Carson City; son, Lowery Trent Dolan, of Carson City; daughter and son-in-law Susan Jeanne Dolan Ballew and Gary Ballew of Carson City; brother and sister-in-law Joe and Marge Dolan of Carson City; grandchildren Billy and Ryan Dolan, Catha Lagere and Mark Ballew; and five great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
