Breast Cancer awareness Month continues

Coming up as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the World Dance Open Floor Night. It can be compared to open-mic night, but instead of using your voice, you use your shoes and moves.

Comma Coffee will host this event Friday. Past performances have included Irish hard-shoe dancing to the Brazilian samba. All the money from the "Think Pink" fundraiser is for Carson Advocates for Cancer Care.

If you don't dance, just come and watch.

The Elks Lodge Fantasy Faire is a night of shopping, with some great values from antiques to collectibles.

It's two days, and you can get in on the early-bird shopping night.

It's Teen Read Week, a national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association.

The objective is to encourage teens to read more. So parents, this week, turn off the televisions, monitor the PlayStations, and get your teens to read.

As part of Teen Read Week, the Carson City Library will host a reception after school from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday. Teens are invited drop in to eat a snack, check out books, or play a game.

The library is also planning "Expresso Yourself," a poetry open mic on Thursday. Get your teens into a good book and help them expand their minds.

If you love pumpkin patches and great causes, don't miss Saturday's Kids & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center's third annual Pumpkin Patch

Kids and Horses is one of my favorite programs. It is amazing to watch a child smile for the first time when he or she realizes, "Look, I can ride a horse."

The freedom people feel from the everyday restrictions they might encounter with special needs dissolves right before your eyes when the realize they can ride. It's truly life-changing, in some cases.

How cool it was to see the smiles and, in one rare moment, hear the first words from a child who was deemed nonverbal. So much for saying miracles can't happen.

The relationship between the horses and their riders brings an improvement in student's ability to walk and strengthens their muscles.

The philosophy is simple: Every human being, regardless of his or her disabilities, can benefit from an equine relationship.

The Kids and Horses Therapeutic Riding Center helps both children and adults with special needs.

Enjoy the pumpkin patch's games, prizes, pony rides, pumpkins for sale, lots of food, a costume party, entertainment and a craft fair.
