Lyon County commissioners are being called upon to approve a $28,900 federal grant to Citizens for Affordable Homes Inc., that will go to the development of townhouses in Carson City.
Ron Trunk, CAHI chief executive officer said the grant, from the Western Nevada HOME Consortium, must be approved by commissioners because the county is the lead agency for the consortium, which includes Carson City, Lyon, Storey, Douglas, Churchill, Pershing and Mineral counties.
"That funding is really a minor amount to do a $8- or $9-million project that we're looking at for the 40 homes," Trunk said.
The funding comes from the federal Community Housing Development Organization, a designation for nonprofit organizations that provide affordable housing. CAHI is affiliated with CHDO.
Trunk said the funds have to be tied to a project, and these are part of a plan to build 40 townhouses during 2006-2007 on Brown and Gordon streets behind Slotworld.
He added the area was rezoned specifically for affordable housing, but the Carson City Planning Department was asking for 30 percent open space, which Trunk said would cost CAHI two units and would raise the proposed prices of the townhouses from $180,000 to $190,000.
The project has not yet been approved by the Carson City Planning Commission or board of supervisors, Trunk said.
Lyon County commissioners will vote on the issue at their 9 a.m. meeting Thursday.
