Douglas soccer beats Hug

Michael Gransbery scored one goal and his assist to Michael Barnes in the 65th minute proved to be the game-winner as Douglas High rallied to post a 2-1 Sierra League boys soccer victory against Hug Wednesday afternoon in Reno.

Douglas rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to pull out a win that improved its league record to 7-5 (13-5-1 overall), good for fourth-place in the standings. It was a big win for the Tigers, according to coach Milko Vasquez.

"They've beaten Wooster and Reno, so they're not shabby at all," Vasquez said. "The kids responded well in the second half. They showed character, I was happy to see."

After the intermission, Douglas only needed four minutes to get on the scoreboard when Oscar Gonzalez delivered a corner kick to the far post, where Gransbery was on hand to convert his 28th goal of the season. He is now three short of the Nevada 4A record for most single-season goals held by former Douglas standout Jeremy Louthan.

Twenty-one minutes later, Gransbery assisted on a Barnes to put the Tigers ahead to stay.

That was enough for a defense led by sweeper Ross Gardner that only allowed Hug to take three shoots on goal. Goalkeeper Jose Alcaraz had two saves for the Tigers.

Eddie Vega and Andrew Andraski also played well in the midfield, according to Vasquez.

Douglas plays host to Reno Saturday at 1 p.m. in another key league contest.
