Fund set up for fire victims

A fund has been established to accept donations for Harold and Gail Barkley of Mound House. Their home was destroyed by fire on Sept. 25, and the couple is asking for help until their insurance claim is settled.

"I'm not trying to make any money on this, I just need a little help to get by," Gail said.

The Barkleys own Truckee Heating, but were forced to miss several weeks of work due to illness and Harold Barkley's broken foot.

Wanted: Local veterans to honor

Carson Middle School eighth-graders will be creating placards to honor veterans for their annual Stakeout, where photographs and biographies of local veterans are displayed on posters staked into the front lawn of the school.

A veterans luncheon will be held 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school's library to match local veterans with students who do not have a family member or friend who has served in the armed forces.

Veterans who are willing to be interviewed are encouraged to bring photographs and memorabilia to share. The Stakeout will also feature an area for those who are currently deployed/active duty.

If you know of someone locally, or if a family member is willing to come in for the luncheon, the service member will be included in the Stakeout.

A veteran and flag ceremony will be held 10:15-11 a.m. Nov. 9 at Carson Middle School. The public is welcome to attend.

Nevada memorabilia available at parade

Nevada Magazine will hold a closeout sale of Nevada merchandise and drop the price on its popular historical calendar by more than half during the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday.

The merchandise closeout sale will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the lobby of the Nevada Commission on Tourism offices in the Paul Laxalt State Building, 401 N. Carson St., next door to the Carson Nugget. The building overlooks the parade route on Carson Street, making it convenient for parade-goers to stop in and see the bargains without missing the action outside.

"You'll find the lowest prices ever on Nevada T-shirts and cozy sweatshirts," Pam Massey, the magazine's retail coordinator, said.

The magazine's online gift and bookshop recently was closed, and all merchandise, including Nevada books and Christmas cards, is being phased out.

At the sale, one can buy two 2007 Nevada Historical Calendars for $10, less than half the usual price of $10.99 each in stores.

Shoppers who are unable to attend the sale can order calendars at the regular price plus $3 for shipping and handling.
