Local runners shine in Meridian Run

Several local runners stood out in the 2006 Meridian Gold Run for Education held at Reno's Meridian Gold Worldwide Headquarters on Sunday.

The event featured 542 5k and 200 10k participants. Hundreds more participated in a 1/2 mile Red Robin Fun Run for children in kindergarten through third grades and 1 1/2 mile Red Robin Fun Run for children in the fourth through sixth grades. Other activities included climbing walls, jump houses, BMX bike show, product demonstrations, food and games.

Running in his first ever race, St. Teresa School fourth grader Elijah Taylor ran to a first place finish in the 9 and under male division with a time of 23 minutes, 22 seconds. His sister, Kailey, also a first time runner finished 19th in the 10 to 12 female division with a time of 31:30.5.

Of all local participants, Carson resident Michael Goralka and Gardnerville's Ellen Lucas may have turned in two of the most impressive runs of the day. Goralka finishing third in the 30-39 male division of the 10k and sixth overall with a time of 35:31.3 and Lucas finishing first in the 50-59 female division of the 5k and 32nd overall with a time of 20:54.5.

Also impressive was Stateline's Neal Chappell who finished first in the 60-69 male division of the 5K and 34th overall with a time of 21:10.6. Top local finishers were:

5K Female

10-12 - Kailey Taylor, Carson City, 31:30.5 19th; Taylor Graham, Carson City, 41:20.1 37th. 30-39 - Sara Holm, Incline Village, 39:14.6 41st. 40-49 - Susie Hahl, Carson City, 32:39.7 28th; Annamaria Bessette, Incline Village, 54:04.6 50th. 50-59 - Ellen Lucas, Gardnerville, 20:54.5 first; Gloria Gero, Gardnerville, 38:12.5 11th; Randy Griffin, Loyalton, Calif., 49:46.8 22nd

10k Female

20-29 - Molly Taylor, Carson City, 1:03:55.1 21st; 50-59 - Rosemary Manning, South Tahoe, 1:04:57.0 eighth.

5k Male

9 and Under - Elijah Taylor, Carson City, 23:22.0 first. 60-69. Neal Chappell, Stateline, 21:10.6.

10k Male

20-29 - Thomas Schwedhelm, Carson City, 42:39.2 fifth. 30-39 - Michael Goralka, Carson City, 35:31.3 third; R. Scott Capistrant, Carson City, 48:59.2 14th. 40-49 - Tim O'Neill, Gardnerville, 1:07:17.9 25th. 50-59 - Ronald Burke, Carson City,1:23:28.8 10th.

Capital City VB clinics are slated

The Capital City Volleyball Club will conduct clinics for girls in grades 4-8 on Oct. 29 (All Skills) and Nov. 5 (Team Concepts).
