Burger stop goes Greek; India Curry meets Bollywood

Carla Martino doesn't want Carson City to think of her restaurant as just another burger joint.

The Italian-American decided to make a market switch to Greek. Juicy's of Carson City is now Paniphias Grill, headed by Greek cook Daniel Demetriou.

Martino and co-owner Kevin Burns are investing about $50,000 to make the burger stop a sit-down restaurant with a line of Greek food.

Some of the additions - such as lamb and chicken gyros - start this week. The 2000 N. Carson St. restaurant will shut down for about 10 days in January for the kitchen and dining room renovations.

The restaurant has been Juicy's since 1985, she said. Martino bought it in 1998. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. On Wednesday, 10 percent of proceeds will be donated to Carson High School.

Another North Carson Street restaurant changed its name recently. Carson City man Amu Singh sold his liquor store in Dayton and bought India Curry, fulfilling his dream of becoming a restaurateur.

He changed the name to Bollywood Fine Indian Cuisine & Bar.

"I talked to many people and they thought Indian Curry was only a curry place. On our menu we have curry, but we have a lot more than that. I like the Bollywood, it's like Hollywood in India."

He plays Bollywood music in the restaurant. Singh also added hard liquor to the bar. He holds a $10 champagne brunch on Sundays.

His favorite new addition to the restaurant: handmade Indian menus decorated with peacock feathers.

Bollywood, 2329 N. Carson St., is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
