A Fernley man injured in an Oct. 6 collision there was removed from life support on Sunday.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said Russell C. Vaughan, 88, died at Renown Regional Medical Center Sunday morning.

On Oct. 6, about 3:20 p.m., Vaughan was attempting to make a left turn from southbound Highway 95 Alternate onto Cottonwood Lane when he failed to yield to a northbound 2004 Peterbilt diesel truck driven by Karl David Czekus, 34, of Reno, said Allen.

Czekus applied the brakes to avoid a collision, but was unable to avoid striking the right front of Vaughan's vehicle with the front of his truck.

Czekus was not injured in the two-vehicle collision while Vaughan was taken by helicopter to the Reno hospital where he was put on life-support.

According to Karen Brown, deputy coroner with the Washoe County Coroner's Office, Vaughan's cause of death will be listed as blunt-force trauma from the automobile accident.
