Karl Neathammer sent me an e-mail this week. I wish I had gotten it earlier, but this message is so important I am not hesitating to put it in this week's article.
We sometimes forget that October is Domestic Awareness Month as well as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Domestic violence happens all year long, not just to women but children as well.
If you have the opportunity offer change to someone in this type of situation, make the call.
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence started a project in 1994 to create a national registry of names to increase public awareness of domestic violence deaths. Log onto www.ncadv.org.
You can help locally by calling Advocates to End Domestic Violence Shelter. Lisa Lee does an outstanding job in assisting women to escape and recover from domestic violence. Give her a call to see how you can help be part of the change.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and the Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 is having a "Turkey Roundup" for the people who Friends In Service Helping (FISH) will be aiding during the holiday season.
Each year, Salvation Army and FISH help families in need to have a warm holiday meal with all the trimmings. I know from the past that Carson City Kiwanis also participates.
We have an amazing city of people who never forget those in need of a warm coat, a sleeping bag, food and shelter. This is a great start in helping families in need during the holidays.
You can also call Advocates to End Domestic Violence and sponsor a woman with children in the shelter.
Elk's Lodge Turkey Round-Up
WHAT'S NEEDED: Frozen turkeys. If there are any turkeys left after the Thanksgiving holiday, they will be saved for Christmas.

Bring your cute goblins, monsters, ghosts and princesses Tuesday to Virginia City.
Virginia City merchants and historical venues are hosting a safe, but scary Halloween for the entire family. The Witching Hour begins with a parade down C Street starting at 4:30 p.m. Lineup is at 4 p.m.
Prizes will be handed out immediately following the parade. And, as is traditional, merchants will be handing out candy for Safe Trick or Treating on C Street following the parade.
The Fourth Ward School, Piper's Opera House, the cemetery and St. Mary's Art Center will have a free trolley to take you to the spooky events.
The Union Brewery will host a Halloween party for adults, with live entertainment and costume contest.
Virginia City's Witching Hour
WHERE: Virginia City
WHEN: Starts at 4 p.m. Tuesday
COST: $15 each or $50 per family, at the Fourth Ward School. Parade is free.

This Saturday will be the first-ever Wine Walk through downtown Carson City. This event is hosted by the Carson City Downtown Business Association.
You can check the new establishment D' Vine Wine, or stroll on down to the tried-and-true Horseshoe Club and the Carson Nugget.
Participants will tour Old Town Carson City's art galleries, gift shops, casinos, and restaurants, and will be eligible for several raffle drawings if their map is turned in at the Carson Nugget by 5 p.m.
Sounds like a start to a fun night. Then enjoy dinner downtown at one of the many fine restaurants.
