Bordewich-Bray Elementary School recently instituted a new program to reward its students with T-shirts for positive accomplishments, good behavior and academic improvement. The school received funds from the PTA to purchase the shirts.

The SPLASH (Students Perform Learn Achieve Show school spirit Here) program incorporated a new logo painted on a wall near the main office. The logo design chosen was drawn by fifth-grader Morgan Barton, 10, after an all-school contest.

Where did you get the idea for your design?

We had an all-school contest and the design had to have certain things like SPLASH, plus our mascot is the dolphin. Everyone else was drawing dolphins coming out of water so I decided to do something different.

In my head, I tried about 20 different designs with the dolphins and shapes like squares and triangles but none of them looked as good.

Where do you get your drawing talent from?

From my mom I think. When I have book reports, she helps me figure out how to draw everything I need to.

Why did you enter the contest?

I wanted to see how far my drawing would get, but I didn't think I would make it to the finals.

How was the design chosen?

All of the drawings were taken and the teachers narrowed it down to the final three. Then the whole school voted for the winner. There were two other designs, one with dolphins jumping out of the water and another with students and a zig-zag design.

What was your reaction when you won and what did you win?

I started screaming and jumping around. My whole class voted for me so when they said I won, everybody started jumping and screaming.

I got 25 free swims at the Carson Community Pool, my logo painted on the wall of my school and a dolphin sun-catcher.

What was it like working with the artist who painted your logo?

It wasn't much different than someone talking to you about your idea and what I wanted to see. She said I could get into business drawing logos for companies.

What's the best part of going to school and Bordewich-Bray?

The teachers are great. They are funny and they go up and hug you and remember everything about you. I like that.
