There will be no administrative business happening today at the Carson City Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Ken Furlong said Thursday.

A planned four- to six-hour power outage is necessary due to construction at the office, he said.

Furlong said that because the length and time of the outage is uncertain, it made sense to close down all administrative functions for the day, including administration, civil, detective, lab, evidence and business division.

The outage will allow workers to install new wiring that will support the department's new two-story, 40,000-square-foot administrative building.

The outage will not affect emergency services, dispatch or the detention center.

Construction of the building is on schedule since it began in July. It is expected to be finished by 2007.

Reception, the civil section, records, auxiliary programs, patrol and property evidence will be on the first floor.

On the second floor will be the sheriff and administration offices, the coroner, detectives, the crime lab and space for a future dispatch center.

In June the department's patrol and records divisions moved to the city's corporate yard on Butti Way.

Furlong said in the coming weeks, passersby will see significant development at the corner of Harbin and Musser streets.

"Pretty soon you'll see walls going up," he said.
