BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): Good reports on Saturday. A couple of fishermen reported limits with worms at Lower Blue.
Tamarack Lake: The water has been drawn down to where it is now three good-sized ponds. All three ponds are very muddy around the edges.
CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County reported that the fishing has slowed down a little. Catching planters from shore and boats. A few limits, but nothing big.
CARSON RIVERS, CALIF: West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported it was quiet over the weekend, except for all of the motorcycles. A few fish caught, mostly planters.
CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: The Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): Big fish of the week were a 7.06 pound rainbow on nightcrawlers at the Marina, a 6.50 pounder on a Thomas Buoyant lure at the inlet, 6.04 pounder on a Thomas Buoyant lyre from the south shore and a 5.12 pounder on a Needlefish lure from the south shore.
FEATHER RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113): Anglers can expect best bite early in the mornings back-bouncing sardine wrapped K-15 or K-16 Kwikfish lures in silver or gold color combos. Look to switch over to roe tipped with a Quickie in hot pink or flame colors, back-bounced or mooched in deeper holes as the sun gets on the water. Most productive water has been from the outlet above Gridley with some good bank fishing opportunities upstream in the low flow section near Oroville. Driftboaters have also reported good fishing in the low flow section of the Feather. Salmon have been averaging 18-22 pounds, with the occasional big 30+ pound salmon being caught. Salmon season closes Sept. 30.
FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Bank fishing is great at the dam as well as at Crystal Point. Nightcrawlers are the main bait for limits of 14-16 inch rainbows. They also work well for the catfish.
INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported it is starting to pick up. Larry Coakley of Redwood City, caught a 6.5 pound rainbow on orange Power Bait from shore. Other fishermen in his group each caught 2-3 fish.
JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF: Steven Osterman reported: Some nice fish starting to show up in Grant Lake at the mouth of Rush Creek. Try Matukas, black or purple Woolly Buggers and Hale-Bopp leeches.
LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750): One angler said he had the best fishing in years at Lahontan. He was fishing with minnows from shore at Beach No. 7. He caught all kinds of bass, walleye, catfish and carp.
MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIF: Steven Osterman: Mammoth Lakes Basin: The best fishing has been at George Lake. Fly rodders casting purple Woolly Buggers. G's Catch 'em All and cinnamon leeches have been scoring consistently. Use a type 3-4 sinking line and a slow, jerky retrieve.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448): Water flows are 8,000 CFS. Fishing for Kings is good. Currently catching 4-8 fish days. Salmon fishing the Anderson area now, seeing limits. Watch for the Salmon fishing to turn from good to red hot come the months of October and November. Looking like a late year again. We should see these months produce even bigger kings and awesome king salmon fishing. All salmon being caught using Flatfish lures, T-50's , Chrome, in color, with a sardine wrap. All Salmon are 20 pounds average, big salmon this year.
LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:
Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): We have been getting our Mackinaw trout early in the morning. I'm tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We have been catching lots of fish, but nothing super big. I've been trolling the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach with flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures.
TWIN LAKES, CALIF: Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): A 6-pound, 7-ounce rainbow on green Power Bait, a 4-pound, 12-ounce rainbow on orange Power Bait and a 3-pound, 13-ounce rainbow on green Power Bait. Kokanee making their run - browns are following. We are emptying our private ponds for the winter. Lots of 3-5 pounders going in weekly.
VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort: Robert Yzaguirre of Riverside catching a 5-pound, 11-ounce brown on Chartreuse Power Worm, free lining on Little Virginia. Todd Yamada of LA caught a nice 5-pound, 12-ounce Alper's on a fly, Karl VonVoigt of Yorba caught a nice 6-pound, 1-ounce Alper's on a small Kastmaster, Haj Kanzaki of Castro Valley took a 6-pound, 2-ounce Alper's on a Lovitt Woolly Bugger. Most of the week has been windy, some days worse than others, but it has not slowed down the fishing at all. Alper's were stocked along with DF&G rainbows, and the parking lot has been full just about every day, except when the treetops were touching the water.
WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Steven Osterman reported: East Walker River: The flow in the river is currently 189 CFS. Fishing is good. Soft hackle Hares ears, Brassies and blood Midges.
WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: It has been down to about 28 degrees at night. Fishing is still excellent. The Perch are going crazy and they are also catching lots of trout. The Perch and trout are being caught on worms. They are catching browns in the early mornings and evenings.
with black or dark-colored Muddler Minnow lures. The water level is staying up good for this time of the year.
