Changing lives by funding scholarships

Friday night, I attended Western Nevada Community College Foundation's seventh annual Appreciation Night. I want to recognize all the wonderful individuals at the college and the donors who continue to provide scholarships each year to many students. Thanks also to groups such as Minden Rotary in Douglas County and companies like Sierra Pacific Power Co., the college handed out $156,000 to well-deserving students. Congratulations!

In the 31 years the college has been open, that is the largest amount yet. Master of ceremony Helaine Jesse did a great job, with the help of Teri Zutter and WNCC President Dr. Carol Lucey. Each of these individuals also are donors of scholarships.

The comment that left the most impact was, "Giving an individual the chance to further their education is the greatest gift."

One scholarship that caught my eye was the "Single Parent Endowment Fund Scholarship." They didn't have the name of who sponsored this scholarship in the booklet, but Julius and Joanne Ballardini are the type of people who need to be recognized for all they do behind the scenes. But I want to thank them for giving a young lady the chance to receive such a life-changing gift.

If you can help with scholarships at the college, the information is below.

Another golf tournament before snow comes our way ... you bet! The 15th annual Community Counseling Center, a nonprofit organization, is planning a great time for golfers. Two of my favorite cooks are donating lunches - Charlie Abowd from Adele's and Jerry Massad from The Cracker Box. This event always fills up quickly so hurry and get your registration in.

After a great day of golfing, there will be a hosted barbecue at a private home on the course. Carson Dodge-Chrysler is donating a new car for a hole-in-one.

There is a tremendous need for The Community Counseling Center because so many at-risk youths requiring its services are from families that can't afford treatment. And families with higher incomes run into financial trouble because insurance does not cover the amount or only covers a percentage.
