Nails scattered on State Route 341 caused several flat tires for motorcycles traveling to Thunder on the Comstock in Virginia City on Saturday.

Storey County Sheriff Jim Miller said deputies found nails scattered on 341 on the northside of Five Mile Flat.

"We don't know if it was deliberate or they fell off a truck, but it seems odd that they were found today," Miller said. "If it was intentional then shame on whoever did it."

Madeline Reutzel, co-owner of the Virginia City Station, said a number of motorcyclists were looking for tire repairs Saturday.

"We've never had a motorcycle tire repair in the 14 years we've been here and we had six today," Reutzel said.

Because the shop doesn't carry the equipment necessary to replace a tire, Reutzel said the shop was temporarily repairing the tubes inside the tires.

"It's a quick fix to get them down the mountain and then they will most likely have to get a new tube," Reutzel said.
