The Carson High girls golf team settled for third in its Sierra League Tournament on Tuesday at Washoe County Golf Club.

But Carson continued to close in on Sierra League frontrunner Reno High, finishing eight strokes behind the Huskies. Carson's previous close to Reno was 10 strokes in last week's tournament.

But the Sierra League appears to be wide open now as Douglas moved up to tie Reno for first in Tuesday's event as both schools finished with a 510. Carson finished with a 518. In the first four league tournaments of the year, Carson took second to Reno.

"They've got a few kids who have improved," said Carson coach Terry Gingell about Douglas. "It's actually bunching up. I think we're right there. We did all right. We didn't play particularly well."

For Carson, Lydia Peri rallied on the back nine to shoot a 95. "She had a very good back nine," Gingell said.

Michelle Kop settled for a 100 after having two bad holes on the back nine. "She played very well aside from those two holes," Gingell said.

Also for Carson, Sarah Metcalf and Chelsea Keating each shot a 102. In her second tournament, Katie Cowperthwaite improved by three strokes from last week, firing a 119. In her first tournament, Julia Lapham shot a 122.

"We can improve on that and I'm sur we will," said Gingell about his team's finish. "Washoe is a long course. It's not an easy golf course by any stretch."

The last regular season league event will be this Tuesday at Lake Tahoe, with the Northern 4A Championships to follow. "Hopefully we'll put it all together by then," said Gingell about zone.
