Scouts honored

Volunteer Scouters were honored at the Pinenut District Recognition Dinner held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel in Minden.

Bob Stewart, past president of the Nevada Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, was master of ceremonies of the event.

Manny Ramos, scout executive NAC, congratulated the district scouters on attaining the Quality District Award.

Bill Brewer, ex-board member, presented a 'Thank You' plaque to Doyle Hanks, retiring district chairman.

Bill Knight, Eagle Board Chairman, presented 2006 Eagle Scouts of the District.

Scouters especially honored were: Cub Leader Rookie of the Year, Mindy Marschner; Cub Leader, Gina Ward; Cub Spirit: Rebecka Croxall; Akela, Barbara Ford; Cubmaster, Ken Kruse; Scout Leader Rookie Ken Schneider; Scout Leader Mark Brewer; Scoutmaster Jason Kling; Venture Leader Jeff Whitaker; Commissioner Mike Burdett; Pinenut Spirit Steve White; Golden Pinenuts were Clayton Chapell, Lindsay Christiansen, Jeanette Miller, Scott Shelton and Jerry Virgo.

Distinguished Commissioner is Katherine Theilen. Award of Merit went to Bill Hartman, Steve Reynolds and Dan Theilen. Pinenut Hall of Famers are Hanks and Eric Summers.

Certificates of appreciation were presented by the Key-3, John Dommina, Katherine Theilen and Bill Waits, to district board chairmen Rob Boehmer, Mike Burdett, Phil Snyder, Jack Darby and Steve Reynolds; and to Round Table commissioners Jody Jarvis, Alvin McDowell, Curt Shufelt and David Fraser; to Barbara Ford, for design and printing of awards, Debbie and Phil Snyder, chefs; and Mike Taylor, office and services.

Nick and Faye Holt, of Minden, are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

Their daughter, Judy Holt of Minden, sent information about their wedding.

"Nick had just turned 18 and Faye was 16 when they decided in secret to get married by eloping. The plan was to leave Fallon and run off to Gardnerville (they were short on funds, means of travel and needed someone to sign since Faye was underage)."

The couple enlisted the support of Faye's older sister and her husband and put the plan into play April 18. (Nick had turned 18 on April 9.)

Nick borrowed money from his soon to be brother-in-law to pay for the marriage certificate and left for Gardnerville. Upon arriving, they discovered Judge Hickey was at the movies, and would have to wait.

Nick and Faye were married and returned to Fallon, wondering how to break the news to their families. They chickened out and each went back to their parents' houses without telling a soul.

After a week, they worked up the courage to fess up. Everyone was happy for them and their life together began.

Parent boosters are hosting a wine-tasting fundraiser at the Carson Airport terminal building, 2600 College Parkway, to raise money for the Carson High School marching band's trip to Disneyland.

While in Disneyland, students will participate in a soundtrack session class and will march down Main Street for a band performance. The cost is $519 per person. Fifty students are planning on attending.

The 6-9 p.m. Saturday wine tasting and dessert will include a silent auction and entertainment from the Carson band.
