East Lake Boulevard has been closed due to a brush fire is burning southeast of Washoe Lake. The fire is now at about 50 acres and is growing because of the winds.
East Lake is closed at Highway 395 on the south and at Douglas Drive on the north. The road is closed to all traffic including homeowners.
Units from Washoe County, Carson City, Reno, the BLM, the USFS and the Sierra Front Fire protection District are on scene. The south end of the fire seems to be holding, but it is actively burning to the north, according to Franklin Pemberton, of the Minden Interagency Dispatch Center.
"We had a good initial attack on it," he said.
The fire is near homes, but not threatening at this time. It is burning just to the north of the park ranger headquarters at Washoe Lake State Park.
Winds in Washoe Valley are from the south/southwest at 20 mph with gusts to 40 mph and are expected to continue until late tonight.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
