Listening library planned
The Cultural and Performing Arts for Dayton Area and the Lyon County library system are beginning a pilot program to create a book drive and listening library, the latter to consist of CDs and DVDs that feature classical music, both instrumental and vocal, operas, jazz, big band and musical theater.

Poetry reading today
The Churchill Arts Council will present a poetry and prose reading with Gailmarie Pahmeier and Willy Vlautin at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., in Fallon from 4-6 p.m. today.

Play about writer Rachel Carson
"A Sense of Wonder," a play based on the life of writer Rachel Carson and written and performed by Broadway, film and TV actress Kaiulani Lee, is the featured presentation at the 10th annual Spring Wings Bird Festival in Fallon.
Carson's most famous work, "Silent Spring," exposed the dangers chemical pesticides posed to the natural environment and is credited with launching the environmental movement. May 27 would be Carson's 100th birthday.
"A Sense of Wonder" will be performed at the Barkley Theater at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon Friday, May 11 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 and include hors d'oeuvres after the performance. Call (775) 423-4556.

Gold Hill plays, follies back
The Gold Hill Theater Troupe is back with its spring plays. On Fridays at 7 p.m., the song, dance and comedy dinner show "Spring Follies" is back. Tickets are $45, reservations recommended.
On Wednesdays 7 p.m., the troupe performs "Yellow Jacket Margaritas" in its After Dinner Theater. Tickets are $28; $10 for the play only.

Antique Mall to hold flea markets
The owners of the Antique Mall at 10104 Highway 50 are looking for vendors for their new flea market. The charge is $10 per day, and set-up will begin at 6 a.m.

Silver City
Lecture on fire department offered
Silver City volunteer firefighter and historian Larry Steinberg will give a lecture on the historic town's fire department from 2-4 p.m. May 13 at the Silver City Fire Department on High Street.
The event will include an Epicurean luncheon and a chance to learn about the little-known but impressive history of Silver City Fire Department's work on fires throughout the Comstock area, 1860s to 1960s.
Steinberg will utilize a unique collection of photos, journals and artifacts during the presentation. This lecture is on the State Historic Preservation Office's list of Historic Preservation Month events (www.nevadaculture.org)
Admission is free.
Master plan visioning discussion set
Everyone in Silver City is invited to a county master plan visioning discussion led by Lyon County Planning Director Rob Loveberg 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Silver City Fire House Office on High Street.
Dinner will begin at 5:30 pm, the discussion will be at 6 p.m.
Virginia City
Lacy J. Dalton to perform at Piper's
Country singer Lacy J. Dalton will perform two shows at Piper's Opera House Saturday and Sunday to benefit restoration of the historic hall and the Let 'Em Run Foundation, which aids area wild horses. Dalton is founder of the wild horse advocacy organization.

Grand Prix bringing motorcycle races back to Comstock
The Grand Prix at Virginia City will be Saturday and Sunday, put on by the Virginia City Motorcycle Club.
Races start on C Stree and circle around the Comstock. It also includes the Truck Route and Six Mile Canyon Road.
Six Mile Canyon Road, Union Street and E Street between Union and Mill streets in Virginia City will be closed.
Registration will be 5-9 p.m. today at the Delta Saloon. Registration Saturday will be 6:30-8:30 a.m. in the pit area, followed by a riders' meeting at 9:30 a.m. on the start line. Racing will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday with a trophy presentation at 5 p.m. at the Delta.
On Sunday, registration is 6:30-8:30 a.m. at the pit area with a riders meeting at 9:30 a.m. on the start line. Novice, Bomber and Vintage races will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Trophy presentation will be at 5 p.m. at the Delta Saloon.
Much of the proceeds benefit the Storey County School District, Jeep Posse Search and Rescue, volunteer fire department and sheriff's reserve. For information, log onto www.vcgp.com.
ICS Chili Cookoff on Cinco de Mayo
Virginia City will hold its 25th annual Cinco De Mayo Fiesta and Chili Cookoff on May 5.
Cooking starts at 10 a.m., with tasting at 12:30 p.m. while the chili lasts.
People's Choice chili will be available at 1:30 p.m. with pots located up and down the boardwalk. Tickets for tasting will be sold at 50 cents each, or 12 for $5.
Take your tickets to the various booths and for each ticket you get a taste of chili. Most tickets received will win the People's Choice award.
For those wanting to cook, entry fees with International Chili Society memberships available are: Red, $30; Chili Verde, $20; and Salsa, $10
International Chili Society membership fee is $42.
First, second and third-place prizes will be awarded in several different categories. The best cooks can expect to cash in on the $1,500 in prize money for Red ICS Chili, ICS Chili Verde, ICS Salsa and best non-ICS chili.
ICS-sanctioned chili contains no beans. Non-ICS chili must contain beans. Winners will advance to the last chance cook off, with a chance to attend the World Chili Cook-off.
The event will also feature live music by a strolling mariachi band from noon to 2 p.m., and piñatas for the children will be smashed each hour from noon to 4 p.m.
