The Carson High boys swim team made an emphatic statement in a late season meet against one of the other Northern 4A powers heading into the zone meet.
The Senators demonstrated their depth in a 161.5-118.5 win over Reno High on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center. "We were pretty deep with the boys," Carson coach Monica Weaver said.
Carson's girls also had their share of outstanding athletes, but didn't have the depth to stay with Reno in a 199-80 loss. "The girls just didn't have the depth," Weaver said.
For the boys, Alex Updegrove, Kevin Dyer, Garrett Clayton and Paul Chang won the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 44.50 seconds. Matt Grunert also led a 1-2 finish in the 100 freestyle as he won in 51.28 while John Wandel was second. In addition, Wandel led a 1-2 finish in the 50 free, winning in 23.57 while Updegrove was second.
Grunert led a 1-2-4 finish in the 100 breaststroke, winning in 1:02.09. Chang was third in 1:08.57 and Scott Wandel was fourth in 1:08.63. Jacob Cornwell led a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke as he won while Sam Ballard was second.
Dyer took second in the 100 butterfly in 55.43 and second in the 500 free in 4:59.35. Grunert was second in the 200 free in 1:52.66. Clayton was second in the 200 individual medley in 2;11.85 while Scott Wandel was third.
Carson was second in the 200 free relay in 1:36.11 with John Wandel, Clayton, Cornwell and Grunert. in the 400 free relay, John Wandel, Dyer, Cornwell and Grunert were second in 3:29.07 and Nick Schlager, Ballard, Albert Reed and Luke Gentner were third. Updegrove and Kurt Anderson took the top two spots in diving as well.
For the girls, Julie Asire swept the 50 and 100 freestyles, winning the 50 free in 25.90 and the 100 free in 56.83. Tatum Boehnke was second in the 500 free in 5:33.00 and third in the 100 fly in 1:05.21. Barbara Perkins was second in the 200 free in 2:06.91 and third in the 200 I.M. in 2:27.33. Jamie Showalter was second in the 100 back in 1:12.43.
Carson was second in the 200 free relay in 1:54.76 with Boehnke, Julia Lapham, Asire and Carrie Linn, second in the 400 free relay with Asire, Boehnke, Lapham and Showalter in 4:07.04 and third in the 200 medley relay with Sarah Metcalf, Perkins, Showalter and Melissa Wurster.
