Carson boys second, girls fifth in championships

Appeal Staff Report

The Carson High boys swim team had one more chance to see where it stands with Reno High at the High Desert League Championships on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

It was the last meeting between the Northern 4A's top two teams before the Northern 4A Championships to be held this Friday and Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Reno still has the upper hand, but the Senators are within striking range.

Reno won Saturday's meet with 447 points while Carson was second with 356. In the girls meet, Reno dominated as expected with 545 points and was followed by Galena (339), Spanish Springs (323.5), McQueen (291) and Carson (191).

Carson, though, was missing two of its top swimmers in Julie Asire and Beth Lewis, who were taking college entrance exams. It figures at full strength, Carson will be battling Galena, Spanish Springs and McQueen for second,

Carson's boys had a spirited battle with Reno in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Garrett Clayton, Matt Grunert, Paul Chang and Luke Gentner beat Reno in the 200 free relay, finishing in 1 minute, 34.56 seconds.

Reno finished in 1:35.18. But Carson was disqualified, so Reno was awarded first. In the 400 free relay, Reno edged Grunert, Cornwell, Kevin Dyer and Gentner. Reno won in 3:27.42 while Carson was second in 3:28.06.
