Bighorns down Springfileld Valley

The Nevada Bighorns hit Springfield Valley (Utah) early and late along the way to a 12-3 victory Saturday at Ron McNutt Field.

""We finally hit the ball. It was the first time in about four weeks," said Bighorns coach Dennis Young, whose team improved to 20-15.

Former Western Nevada College and current University of Nevada catcher Tyson Jaquez (1-for-4, 1 RBI) put the Bighorns up, 1-0, with a first-inning home run.

After Springfield Valley tied the game in the top of the second, the Bighorns took the lead for good, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second.

Carson High School graduate and WNC infielder Kevin Schlange (1-for-5) had a three-run double in a four-run Nevada eighth.

Jeff Young (2-fort-4), Steve Mays (1-for-3) and J.J. De Millo (1-for-4, 1 RBI) also contributed offensively for the Bighorns.

Starter Daniel Eastham went seven innings for Nevada, spreading out three runs, four hits and four walks. He also struck out four.

Eric Melendez closed the show for the Bighorns, striking out one and giving up one hit and one walk in two innings.

The Bighorns will face the Reno Astros beginning at 7 p.m. at Moana Stadium.

NOTES: The Bighorns 13-and-under team won two games on Saturday to stay in the winner's bracket in Reading, Calif. The Bighorns won their first game, 7-3, over a team from Oregon before beating the Carson Renegades, 16-0.
