Swinging for a knockout at the Lyon County Fair and Rodeo

Some new events will be added to the perennial favorites at the Lyon County Fair and Rodeo, going on next week at the fairgrounds in Yerington.

Along with the usual 4-H shows, tractor pulls, pig scrambles and rodeos will be boxing, courtesy of regional boxing groups.

Quentin Blue Horse, who is part of the War Party Boxing Club that trains in Dresslerville, said he was planning a minimum of 14 fights and possibly as many as 17.

Among the boxers slated to fight are Vinnie Reymus of Carson City, Andrew Remp of Yerington, Kyle Johnson of Schurz and Tipton Hinkey of Wadsworth. Reymus comes from fighting stock; his father was a professional boxer, Blue Horse said.

He said boxers range in age from 8-27 and will be evenly matched in terms of age and weight.

He said that organized boxing clubs in the region put on matches, using the admission to help the clubs survive.

"It's not a school sport, so we don't have schools supporting us," he said. "I just spent $400 on an order from Everlast and that basically comes out of our pocket."

He said there's boxing every weekend somewhere in Northern Nevada, but when he looked for a place to have boxing during the weekend of the fair, he found no takers.

"Because of the fair, the gym in town at the Boys and Girls Club was taken and in the high school gym, they're redoing the floors," he said. "I called one of the guys on the fair board and they liked the idea of doing it at the fair."

The matches will take place near the entrance of the Lyon County Fairgrounds from 3-6 p.m. on Aug. 18. Each match will go three two-minute rounds, with a minute in between.

"They've very supportive of it," Blue Horse said. "The guys can go out there and compete and it's good to have the support behind them."

Fine art will also be on display at the fair, with Pat Fietta and the folks who run the Lyon County Courthouse Gallery taking over the 2007 Lyon County Fair & Rodeo Fine Arts and Photography Show.

More artists are needed to submit their work, she said, which will be accepted at the Ray Voshall building toward the back of the rodeo arena at the fairgrounds from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday.

Each artist shows five entries no larger than 36 inches-by-48 inches including frames, Fietta said. All art must be framed except for stretched canvas and ready for hanging with wire rather than string attached to the back. No taped, gummed or saw-tooth hangers will be accepted.

She said artwork submitted must have been completed within the last year.

"Anybody in the state can register," she said. "It's not restricted to Lyon County residents. We've had people from Schurz and Carson City come in."

Winners at the fair will have their work exhibited for six weeks at the Lyon County Courthouse Gallery from Aug. 20-Sept. 28, she said.

There will be two main sections in the competition: Photography and fine arts. Photography will have categories for black-and-white and color photographs, but no distinction will be made from 35mm to digital work.

In the Fine Arts section, categories are acrylics, mixed media, graphics, oils, pastels, watercolor and sculpture.

There are four divisions by status of the artists: Youth, which is 16 and younger; Amateur, for work done as a hobby and not sold professionally; Advanced Amateur, those whose skills and training are professional-level; and Professional, whose work is sold to the public on a regular basis.

Work must have themes that can be viewed by the general public, Fietta said.
