George Arthur Leary

George Arthur Leary, 85, a 22-year resident of Carson City, died Aug. 24, 2007, in Carson.

Mr. Leary was born June 5, 1922, in London, England. He served as a sergeant in the British Commandos during World War II. He was wounded in the D-Day invasion.

He attended medical school and worked at the Royal Eye Hospital in London. He developed equations and techniques for ultrasound. In the 1960s at Washington State University and for NASA he worked with the chimpanzees that went into space. He retired from Washington State University in 1983. He also studied myopia among the Inupiat tribe of Alaska.

He was a member of the Royal Mountaineering Society in England. He enjoyed hiking in the Sierra Nevada.

Among his survivors are his daughter and son-in-law Denise and David Miller; grandchildren Nicole and Matthew Miller, all of Carson City.
