Bids sought for next phase of bypass

Nevada transportation officials will open bids for the next section of the Carson City freeway Feb. 8.

Phase 2A will cost an estimated $51.9 million and extend the freeway from Highway 50 south to Fairview Drive. It will take about two years to build.

Project Manager Jim Gallegos said the Nevada Department of Transportation had to wait for utility companies to finish moving power, gas, telephone and other services to make way for the freeway. All those services had to be relocated underground plus city water and sewer lines had to be moved before work on the road could commence.

Wind flips big rigs, knocks out power

Wind blew hard through the region Tuesday, causing power outages and plunging people into darkness, high-profile vehicles to overturn, and general havoc.

"We've been responding to a lot of routine storm-related calls," said Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

The National Weather Service issued warnings about the winds that are expected to continue through this morning as part of a strong Pacific storm system with rain and snow.
