The historical background of Stewart Indian school was told by Mrs. Nelie Harner at the Leisure Hour Club. In 1869 the Indians requested Governor Nye to start a school because they refused to send their children to Carson City. As a result of an act of the 1887 Nevada legislature, the Indian boarding school in Ormsby county was created through the "Indian School Commission." In 1890 the federal government purchased the newly-built school buildings and 240 acres of land. Originally known as Stewart Institute (it received its name from the late Senator Stewart), the school later was known as Industrial Training School and later Carson Indian school.
