All branches of the Lyon County Library are offering food in exchange for fine forgiveness for overdue books.

Through Dec. 28, patrons can bring in one item of nonperishable food for each overdue library item that is on the record or being returned late.

It does not apply to library materials that are lost of must be replaced.

Collected food will be distributed by Lyon County Human Services during the holiday season. Takes place at all Lyon County library branches.

Fernley

Wreaths to be laid at vets cemetery

Wreaths Across America will host a wreath-laying ceremony 9 a.m. Saturday at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

The group hopes to decorate 2,500 graves with wreaths across the region.

All the service flags will be raised and the wreaths will be placed in the front wall, with the event being organized by the American Legion Post #37 and the Civil Air Patrol.

Rural housing official offers housing assistance

An official from the Nevada Rural Housing Authority will take applications for their rental assistance program from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Fernley Senior Center, 1170 West Newlands Drive.

Rural Housing provides rental assistance to low-income families, senior citizens and residents with disabilities. Call 887-1795.

Hawthorne

Concert to benefit arts council

Popular local music duo, "Deuce" will play a benefit concert 7-9 p.m. Saturday for the Mineral County Council on the Arts at the High Desert Arts and Culture Center, 360 Sixth St., Hawthorne. Tickets are $5.

Nonalcoholic beverages will be available at the concert and all proceeds benefit the Mineral County Council on the Arts, which runs the High Desert Arts and Culture Center in the historic 6th Street Primary School building. For information on the benefit concert 945-3954.

Silver Springs

Angel tree for seniors at market

Village Market is the site of the Silver Springs Senior Center's Senior Angel Tree.

Customers can choose an angel from the tree, which will list a gift for a local senior citizen.

Residents participating in the program have until Sunday to drop off the gift at the Senior Center. Call 577-5014.

Clampers, Widders in holiday food drive

E. Clampus Vitus and the Widders of Nevada are seeking donations for the group's eighth annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive.

The ECV and Widders need nonperishable food items, toys and cash for their drive. Checks can be made payable to the Widders of Nevada, tax identification number 51-0424359. Call 577-3348.

Church selling Christmas trees

Stagecoach Church of God, 8925 Highway 50 East is selling living Christmas trees until they run out.

The trees are of various sizes and at affordable prices, which vary. The sales benefit the church's local youth and outreach programs. Hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday.

Winter Solstice and birthday party set

A free Winter Solstice and community birthdays for December will be celebrated at a special party at 7 p.m. today at Piper's Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

The event is potluck, and those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation for Community Chest food closet. Kids can get their pictures taken with Santa Claus or Rocky Raccoon.

Angel Tree adoption program

Angel tree ornaments for the Angel Tree adoption program sponsored by Community Chest Inc., are in the Virginia City Post Office and Hillside Elementary School.

The ornaments have wishes of people in the county who need holiday gifts. Donors can take an angel off the tree, purchase the items listed, wrap and label them, and return them to the tree. Call 847-9311.

'Nutcracker' done in classical guitar, baroque dance

Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Holiday Concert featuring a special performance of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Piper's Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

Performers include Stephen Mattingly, Larry Aynesmith, Micah Dunn and Brian Stone, plus renowned dancer Sapphira and the Baroque Spirit Dream Ensemble. Call 847-0433.

Muckers present 'The Tempest'

The Virginia City High School Theater Muckers will perform William Shakespeare's "The Tempest' for their fall 2007 production. "The Tempest" is believed to be the last play written solely by Shakespeare.

The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 and 2 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Virginia City High School commons. The performance was postponed from Dec. 8-9 due to snow.

Tickets are $10 for adults; $7 for students and children younger than 12. Call 847-0992.
