It was another close loss for the Carson High girls basketball team in a 50-47 defeat to Nipomo at the Morro Bay (Calif.) Tournament on Friday.

The Senators (0-6) trailed 26-21 at halftime before Nipomo was able to build a 10-point lead in the third quarter. Carson closed to withiin 44-40 late in the game.

Down 50-44, Yvonne Hollett hit a three-pointer to pull Carson within 50-47 with 3.4 seconds left. After Carson fouled, Nipomo missed both foul shots, but the Senators were unable to take a shot before the game ended.

Like its loss to Pioneer Valley on Thursday, free throws again were the difference. Carson was 7-of-11 from the line while Nipomo was 12-of-22.

"We're trying to be a bit more aggressive defensively," Carson coach Todd Ackerman said.

Ackerman also said if Carson would have converted more of its inside shots, it may have won. "That was a big factor," he said. "We probably would have won the game."

Gina Bianchi had another strong game for Carson with 17 points. Hollett scored 10 points and Krista Mattice added six points.

"We just didn't get it done," Ackerman said. "At times we are getting better. At times we still do a lot of the same mistakes.

"We're giving ourselves opportunities and that's all we can do right now. We did a few things better. We've got a long ways to go, yet."

Carson finished the tournamen today with games at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
