Finalists named for Points of Light awards

Finalists have been named for the governor's Points of Light awards.

The annual ceremony will name seven outstanding volunteers and organizations around the state. It is scheduled for Jan. 31 at Sam's Town in Las Vegas.

The awards were created to recognize individuals and organizations for their dedication and commitment to promoting and supporting volunteerism in Nevada.

Awards for individual volunteers from the north, south and rural areas of the state along with awards for the outstanding non profit organization and corporation have been made for several years.

A spokesman for the governor's office said Gov. Jim Gibbons and First Lady Dawn Gibbons have added two more categories to the list this year: The Nevada Youth Award and the Nevada Senior Award.

This year's nominees for the different awards are:

Individual from the north - Rosemary Smith, Merideth Toddre, Ralph Toddre

Individual from the south - High Anderson III, Troy Martinez, Lauren Meyer

Individual from rural Nevada - Jeffrey Lambin, Cathy Girard, Jack Smith

Nonprofit service organization - Children's Miracle Network, Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association, University Medical Center Explorers

Corporate/Business award - Pardee Homes, Sierra Pacific Resources, Wells Fargo

Nevada Youth Award - John Henry Lambin, Nye Communities Coalition Youth Organization, Lanie Patten

Nevada Senior Award - Richard Bennett, Robert Miller, Jean Peyton
