Lisa Stocke, a Carson Middle School technology teacher friend of mine, is raising money with an interactive Technology Night.

This event will provide hands-on fun from CO2 Dragster races, Egg Crash Car Testing, Paper Airplanes, Spaghetti and Marshmallow Bridges and so much more.

Here's a great way to get your children excited about middle school education and technology. Several local businesses will display how they use technology in their work environment.

Come out and join a family night of fun coupled with education.

Technology Night

WHEN: 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday

WHERE: Carson Middle School gymnasium, 1140 W. King St.

CONTACT: If you are interested in sharing your career with students and their families, call Lisa Stocke at 283-2869.

The Presbyterian church has joined with the Methodist church in kicking off the Interfaith Service and Homeless Tent City.

I know this will bring direct attention to the plight of the homeless within our state.

It's not just about homelessness, it's about seeing what we can come together to change.

So you have the opportunity, stand up for the homeless population and pitch a tent Sunday. Or give organizer Elizabeth Dorway a call and see how you can help if you can't stay all night in the cold.

Tent City

WHERE: Kick off at 4 p.m. in front of the Legislature. Dinner will be served at the Presbyterian church at 6 p.m. The interfaith service will be at the Methodist church at 7 p.m.

WHEN: Sunday-Feb. 19

CONTACT: RSVP with Elizabeth Dorway at ihndirector@sbcglobal.net or 284-5566.

I wanted to give everyone an update on the Pencil Warriors. Fremont Elementary took up the cause, and, with the help of Fremont teacher and longtime child advocate Pam Cowperwaite, decided to help collect items for Pencils for Peace.

What a lovely way to teach a lesson in compassion. A special thanks to Gary Lyons for bringing it to our city's attention and to all of you who have helped.

The Pencils for Peace Web site is about to be launched, and you can check out this worthy cause.

Here's wishing Lt. Col. Dave Brusman and all the others stationed in Afghanistan the very best in this amazing effort to help the country's children.
