May court date set in Storey rollover case

A new date has been set for a preliminary hearing against a Dayton man charged in the rollover-accident death of a Carson City teen.

Randy Boyd, 22, will appear at the hearing May 21 in Storey County Justice Court to determine if there is enough evidence to try him on charges of felony reckless driving causing death, failure to render aid and battery with a deadly weapon.

According to police, Boyd was the driver of a pickup truck that ran Robert De La O's Lincoln Continental into a guardrail on Six Mile Canyon Road following a high-speed car chase and a fight at a Mark Twain market on Dec. 9.

A preliminary hearing originally set in January was delayed after Storey County District Attorney Harold Swafford added the battery charge. He said state police findings during the accident-reconstruction investigation indicate that Boyd's vehicle struck the Lincoln before the rollover.

Boyd's attorney requested the hearing be continued so he would have time to study the report.

Boyd's passenger, Daren Vandenberg, 22, pleaded guilty to a charge of misdemeanor obstructing or delaying an investigation because he and Boyd allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

He was sentenced to 96 hours of community service, a suspended sentence of 30 days in jail, one year probation and $1,132 in fines and court fees.

Also injured in the rollover were De La O's passengers, Sam Villa, 17; Jose Elizondo Jr., 18; and David Flores, 17.
