A hearing in Storey County Justice Court on Friday will determine if there is enough evidence to try two Dayton men in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a Carson City teen.

Randy Boyd, 22, is charged with felony reckless driving causing death and failing to render aid at the scene of a fatal accident. Daren Vandenberg, 22, is charged with gross misdemeanor conspiracy to commit reckless driving in the Dec. 9 death of Robert De La O, 16.

According to Storey County investigators, Boyd and Vandenberg got into a physical dispute with De La O and three other teenagers at the Occidental Mini Mart in Dayton before allegedly chasing De La O in his Lincoln Continental up Six Mile Canyon Road.

The chase ended when the Lincoln struck a guardrail and overturned.

De La O was pronounced dead at the scene. Passenger, Jose Elizondo, 16, was cut from the wreckage and flown to a Reno hospital.

Two other teen passengers fled before police arrived. They were later located with moderate injuries at a Mark Twain home.

Boyd and Vandenberg also allegedly fled the scene, leaving behind a license plate. Boyd was contacted at his home the following morning, and the truck with damage to the driver's side and a crushed hood was found in the garage.

The criminal complaint charges him with "driving his vehicle erratically and at speeds of up to 80 mph through a 25 mph zone while in pursuit of another vehicle, ultimately causing the death of Robert De La O."

The complaint goes on to allege, Boyd "failed to immediately stop his vehicle at the scene of the accident."

Vandenberg is accused of conspiring with Boyd to chase De La O's vehicle.

Both men are out of jail on bail.
