Appeal Staff Report

The Nevada Bighorns dropped the last two games of its series with the San Francisco Seagulls on Sunday, losing the opener 11-7 and the nightcap 2-0 at Ron McNutt Field.

The Seagulls ended up taking three-of-four in the series.

The Bighorns' Ryan Simpson and Matt Maggiolo were locked in a pitchers duel in the nightcap as both pitchers carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. It was an impressive effort by Maggiolo as he did something rarely seen any more, pitching two complete game wins in both ends of the doubleheader.

In the seventh, Mike Aicardi and Geoff Downing both walked. Then on a 3-2 pitch with two outs and the runners going, Mike Corbett hit a two-run single as Downing was able to score all the way from first on the play. Simpson ended up pitching a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out five over seven innings.

Maggiolo pitched a three-hit complete game shutout, striking out two, walking one and hitting a batter. Tyson Jaquez had two hits and Aaron Henry had the other hit for the Bighorns.

In the opener, the Bighorns trailed 11-3 when they rallied for four runs in the seventh. Kevin Schlange walked and Henry doubled before Jeff Young's RBI sacrifice fly made it 11-4. Steve Mays also had an RBI double and Adam Anderson had an RBI single during the rally that made it 11-7.

Owen Brolsma finished up on the mound in the seventh for the Bighorns as he was touched for two runs on the strength of two hit batsmen and two infield singles that made it 11-3. Brolsma did strike out two.

Henry had three hits, Jaquez hit a three-run home run to account for the Bighorns' runs before the seventh, Steve Mays had two hits and Simpson and Young each added a hit. Jake Walter went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI and Ryan Peterson was 4-for-4 for the Seagulls.

The Bighorns will next play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Moana Stadium against the Reno Astros.
